Pearl S. Buck Buck, Pearl S(ydenstricker) (Vol. 11) - Essay. Buck, Pearl S(ydenstricker) 1892–1973. Buck was an American novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist, editor, biographer, autobiographer, author of juvenile literature, and translator. The daughter of Presbyterian missionaries, Buck spent almost forty years in China, and in her published work strove to interpret China for the Western world. Referencing Ancient! Her work has generally been regarded as skillful in its portrayal and medical essay conclusion, interpretation of Oriental life, but weak artistically.

A champion of many humanitarian causes, Buck often allowed a didactic quality to override artistic objectivity in her work. Her third book, The Good Earth , was both a popular and critical success, however, winning for the author the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, becoming the first American woman to ancient history essays achieve that honor. In addition to her novels of Chinese life, Buck wrote several novels with an American setting under the pseudonym of John Sedges. (See also CLC , Vol. 7, and Contemporary Authors , Vols.

1-4, rev. ed.; obituary, Vols. 41-44, rev. ed.) Access our Pearl S. Buck Study Guide for Free. [It is] as novelist, as pure literary artist, that Mrs. Buck regards herself and prefers to cover graduate be regarded. It seems worth while, therefore, to consider her books as novels, works of art, to analyze them as fiction, without prejudging them by referencing essays applying any label.

Let us, that is, for a moment forget that Mrs. Centre! Buck is famous as the novelist of China, the author of those Chinese books, and inquire simply, as with any unknown novelist, into her choice of material and her technique. Such an ancient history, analysis is in her case difficult, for there is a firm unity in her work which makes its component parts not easily distinguishable, but I am sure that the degree of permanence to be achieved by any fiction can only be ascertained by assessing it as a work of art. (p. 791) Mrs. Buck's chosen scene—and it is part of our scheme to state it thus coolly—is modern China. Narrative Writing! There are parts of that vast country where modern China means the same as ancient China; there are parts where the change of date implies a profound social change.

These two Chinas, the old and the new, form the ancient essays material for Mrs. Buck's art…. [The] attempt is made to present China from within, as the Chinese see it…. [The] landscape in Mrs. Buck's novels is attorney business development plan always presented as seen by familiar eyes. Now this is one of the great difficulties of the novelist who chooses to history essays write about a land not native to him; he is likely to write of the scenery as he, the stranger, sees it, not as the for project fresh graduate man who has lived with it all his life; the dawns are lurid with beauty to the stranger, where the native sees the coming of referencing ancient history essays rain or the rising of a wind…. Mrs. Buck has lived in ponzi research China so long that she really knows the landscape, and she never once, in all the referencing ancient history essays volume of her work, forgets it and xyz homework answers, goes into raptures as over an alien scene. Essays! (p. 792) In the same way Mrs.

Buck aims to present the cover letter for project fresh Chinese customs as familiar, natural and referencing ancient, correct, because so would her characters regard them. Xyz Homework! The customs at history birth and death and marriage and new year, the earthen gods, the family ceremonial, the slavery of women, are all copiously illustrated, but always presented, as it were, unself-consciously, as part of the natural process of living; never by the slightest word or turn of phrase does Mrs. Buck call our attention to the difference of these customs from our own. This may be thought a commonplace, but, in fact, an identification with one's characters so complete and so well sustained is rare in fiction; nor is this an xyz homework answers, unimportant matter, but a quality which goes far in welding the firm unity we have already mentioned. Her picture of the Chinese civilization is highly remarkable, then; for ancient history essays, she presents to cover for project graduate us China as the Chinese see it, but in language (of both lip and mind) which we understand. (p. 793) [The] language in which Mrs. Buck presents this material shares the same dual character.

It is essays English—very plain, clear English; yet it gives the impression that one is reading the letter engineer language native to the characters all the referencing ancient essays time. This is very largely due, I think, to the entire absence of Chinese words in xyz homework the prose…. The prose which is broken by many foreign words in italics accentuates our sense of being English-speaking people reading a book written in English about an alien race. Especially is this the referencing ancient case when the foreign word is followed by narrative writing assignments an explanation of its meaning. Pearl Buck never uses a Chinese word, never needs to explain one. Even Mah-Jongg, for example, is called sparrow dominoes—and very rightly, since that is what the Chinese word means to the Chinese. Referencing! On the other hand, Mrs.

Buck never, I think, uses a word for which a literal translation into Chinese could not be found. The effect of her prose is to scheme research paper translate what the Chinese mean into language which means that to us. That it is also exceedingly beautiful prose is just our luck, so to speak, and a remarkable instance of Mrs. Referencing History! Buck's skill. The grave, quiet, biblical speech, full of xyz homework answers dignity, in which Mrs.

Buck, without ever raising her voice, is able to referencing render both the development deepest and the lightest emotions—the feeling of a mother over referencing ancient essays her dead child and xyz homework, the excitement of an old man over his tea—is a fine example of an instrument perfectly adapted to its task. (pp. 793-94) Mrs. Buck's main characters in each novel, always Chinese, always belong to one family, the action being seen through the eyes of that family alone…. There are other characters, but they are subsidiary; the main drama is not that of ancient essays clash between house and house, but consists in narrative writing assignments high school the varying fortunes and happiness of one house alone. [The Good Earth is] a parable of the life of man, in his relation to the soil that sustains him. The plot, deliberately commonplace, is given a sort of legendary weight and dignity by being placed in an unfamiliar setting.

The biblical style is appropriate to the subject and the characters. Attorney Development! If we define a masterpiece as a novel that is living, complete, sustained, but still somewhat limited in its scope as compared with the greatest works of fiction—if we define it as Wuthering Heights rather than War and Peace—then [The Good Earth is referencing a masterpiece]. But it wasn't intended to narrative writing assignments high school stand alone…. Miss Buck planned to write three novels that would fit together and become a sort of referencing ancient history essays Chinese Buddenbrooks. Sons, the second novel, is a long step toward achieving this purpose. Considered by itself, I'm not sure that it isn't even better than The Good Earth.… Once again the plot falls into a legendary pattern, since the career of Wang the Tiger is based on one of the oldest and most exciting stories in Chinese folklore, that of the Good Bandit…. Besides this drama, the book has a quality that one doesn't associate with Pearl Buck—a rather earthy humor, most of xyz homework answers it rising from the contrast between the traditional place of Chinese women—who are supposed to be household slaves—and the real power that they exercise over their lazy and history essays, self-indulgent husbands. But A House Divided is a different story. It doesn't matter whether you judge it by itself or by what it contributes to the trilogy; in either case it is surprisingly inferior….

Its most obvious weakness is its style. In the course of the three novels, Miss Buck has changed her setting from past to present, from an. (The entire section is 723 words.) East Wind: West Wind [Pearl Buck's first book] is usually spoken of as a novel, but, actually, it consists of two definite short stories with a decided break between them. The first narrative is more poetic and romantic; the second, more sparse and moralistic. The Dreiser influence, which we are to see displayed particularly in The Good Earth , is non-existent in this book. East Wind: West Wind is written in a much more delicately wrought and self-conscious style than is found in the later works of Pearl Buck. While basically simple in form, the answers style in this work is referencing ancient somewhat artificial. The style tends to be choppy, slow-paced, heavily romantic, often strikingly exotic, reminiscent in many of its colorful images of Edward Fitzgerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam . The prose is often too consciously flowery, and narrative assignments school, several purple passages also appear too obviously calculated for effect.

The framework of having Kwei-lan write the details of the story to the foreign lady who has lived in referencing history essays China becomes increasingly artificial, forced, and wearisome as the narrative progresses. A certain amount of extraneous description occurs; for medical essay conclusion, example, there are some rather unnecessarily detailed portraits of the concubines in Kwei-lan's father's house. Such descriptions are yanked into the narrative for evident background and coloring, but the majority of Miss Buck's descriptions serve the useful purpose of enumerating the manners of referencing ancient history essays aristocratic Chinese families and of underscoring the complete differences in customs between China and the West. Here the book is most successful. Cover Letter For Project! Both the situation and the reality of the problem present themselves in a credible fashion, and the book does manage to convey a definite flavor of setting, scene, and authenticity of locale—later a basic characteristic of Pearl Buck's fiction. At times sentimentalism predominates…. Referencing History! Perhaps Miss Buck overlabors the point that, in narrative writing assignments school their basic emotions and feelings people the world over ancient history essays are, regardless of race, much alike. In spite of its deficiencies, East Wind: West Wind contains several effective passages, and the theme is meaningful. The characters are caught in a modern dilemma, and the happy resolution in Kwei-lan's case and the semi-tragic resolution in her brother's are convincingly rendered.

The objections of the Chinese mother and father to a foreign daughter-in-law strike a common chord, and the tensions produced from their prejudices and instinctive attitudes bring focus to the problem. Truth is at the core of East Wind: West Wind , but at times the veneer of romanticism and sentimentalism blurs and softens this truth. In an overall view, East Wind: West Wind remains more interesting for its promise than for its effectiveness as a book in its own right. Although it reveals several weaknesses—uncertainty in handling a story framework, tendencies to stylistic artificiality, and a pronounced sentimentality—it points up the fact that Miss Buck has a thorough knowledge of for project fresh graduate her subject and possesses a fundamental narrative sense. Her first book of fiction also demonstrates that she is a novelist who is in the happy position of understanding both sides in various conflicts between two different worlds, and between the old and new customs. Miss Buck has established a solid hook on which she can hang innumerable stories revolving around these themes.

Perhaps the ancient history essays most important aspect of East Wind: West Wind was that it gave Pearl Buck the necessary confidence to continue in the field of fiction since she now realized that a market for stories using Chinese materials was available. (pp. Conclusion! 33-4) The impetus for [ The Good Earth ] was the anger she had experienced because the common people of China were so often oppressed and abused. When she was prepared to write The Good Earth , she acknowledges that there was no plot or plan. Only the man and the woman and their children stood there before me. Later, she came to realize, however, that these people were not just Chinese; they were representative of referencing ancient history essays farming people the world over. They were universal in their struggles, in their joys, in their disappointments. (p. 37) A vividness of both character and scene … distinguishes The Good Earth ….

Part of the reason for this vividness rests in the universality of the novel's various portraits. (p. 38) [Portrayed] with graphic authority is the ebb and flow of life, its change and perpetual movements, not only seasonally from scheme paper spring to winter, from seed planting to harvest, but also a cycle of both family and humanity. Past links with present, and present links with future…. [A] sense of being shaped by referencing ancient history essays eternities is one of the characteristics of The Good Earth . (pp. 38-9) In addition, careful handling and emphasis on both the precise and the appropriate descriptive details … enhance the [universality] of medical school conclusion experience…. The descriptions are never overdrawn or excessive; their conciseness always centers on ancient concrete, closely observed, essential details; and, although the scene which we behold is unfolding in a distant land and many of the practices and traditions are exotic or picturesque, we see the essential logic and reality of these customs in their time and narrative school, place. In its economy and in its laconic but vital lyricism, the descriptive passages in The Good Earth often remind us of Ernest Hemingway's writing. The style bears no dross; only descriptive details necessary to convey the scene or to reinforce the mood are recorded. The style of The Good Earth is one of the novel's most impressive characteristics. This style is based on essays the manner of the old Chinese narrative sagas related and written down by storytellers and on the mellifluous prose of the King James version of the Bible. (pp.

39-40) Pearl Buck's writing in The Good Earth is characterized by simplicity, concreteness, a stress on long serpentine sentences, parallelism, balance, and repetition of words. Plan! Although the majority of the sentences are lengthy, they break into shorter, sometimes choppy, segments of referencing history thought which undulate in movement. Narrative Assignments High! The style, generally slow-paced, evinces a quiet stateliness and seriousness. Referencing Ancient Essays! It does not at all rival the color or richness of the biblical imagery, principally because it follows the simplicity of word choice of the Chinese saga rather than the more imaginative and assessment centre essay, exotic coloring of the referencing ancient history essays Old and New Testaments. At certain times Miss Buck's style achieves poetical suggestion, but never is the imbalance between the normal and the more poetic so pronounced as to produce isolated purple passages, as was the case in East Wind: West Wind . The style of The Good Earth is unusually appropriate for narrative assignments school, the saga story. The simplicity and the slow but steady movement of the prose fit harmoniously the referencing history heroic and epic-like qualities of the narrative. (pp. 40-1) In structure, The Good Earth uses a chronological form which proceeds at centre essay a fairly regular pace.

Some climaxes occur, although they do not reach too much higher than the normal incidents in the story. The movement is slower and somewhat less arresting after O-lan's death, but some slackening is inevitable in a roman-fleuve . (p. 42) Although The Good Earth places much emphasis on the family unit, and the analysis of the family fortunes is pivotal, the main characters are studied in detail. Ancient! The portrayal of attorney business Wang Lung's character is starkly frank.

His strengths and history, weaknesses are candidly examined and bared before the reader; and while, on the basis of a superficial reading, he might appear to be a one-dimensional figure, he actually runs the whole gamut of human emotions. (pp. 42-3) Mention should be made of the haze of romanticism which hovers over and about the answers novel. Miss Buck has wisely avoided the artificial romanticism and the obvious sentimentalism which marred East Wind: West Wind . Yet the story of The Good Earth , although it maintains a convincing realism, takes on a certain exotic remoteness which lends additional charm to its episodes. The strange is made familiar, and the familiar is made pleasantly strange….

The faraway coloring of ancient essays The Good Earth lights the school essay familiar elements with new freshness and appeal. Realism and romanticism blend in just the right proportions. Ancient History! Life is given the glow of letter fresh legend, and legend is referencing ancient essays given the aura of life. (pp. 44-5) Pearl Buck has acknowledged the influence of Zola, and it is answers almost immediately evident.

Certainly The Good Earth is Naturalistic in many ways: in its documentary approach to its material, in its detached and objective presentation, in its stress on factors of environment and heredity, in its accuracy of setting and descriptive details, and in ancient history its interest in impoverished and answers, earthy people who dwell on the lower strata of social class. Yet, at the same time, several differences exist between Miss Buck's approach and Zola's. She is much less interested in sordidness, brutality, and squalor; and her emphasis on these factors arises out of referencing history essays a more balanced and wholesome interest in things as they are than from a deliberate stress on the seamier aspects of life in order to shock and horrify. (p. 46) Realism rather than Naturalism would be a more accurate term to apply to Pearl Buck's work. The pessimism and despair of a writer like Zola are far removed from Miss Buck's more affirmative approach to things as they exist and attorney business plan, from the basic meliorism which her writing in general displays.

She stands as an optimist rather than as a pessimist, although she often hears and records the eternal note of sadness. Referencing Ancient History! (p. 47) As a novel, Sons [sequel to The Good Earth ] labors under the handicap which all sequels to famous books must face. A narrative to equal The Good Earth would have to xyz homework be more powerful and absorbing than Sons . Yet, within its own limitations, Sons is an interesting, worth-while novel and a work of no mean effort. It perhaps suffers in that the emphasis on brigands and war lords, on their characteristics and activities, seems somewhat remote to referencing essays a Western audience. Medical Essay! (p.

59) The fundamental defect of Sons is the weakness of the characterization of Wang the Tiger. Ancient History! (pp. 59-60) In contrast to [actual war lords throughout Chinese history], Wang the Tiger is a considerably more limited and assignments school, colorless individual. Although the referencing essays reader comes to know him quite well, a particular remoteness about him persists. His motives and behavior are analyzed at some length, but he does not come fully alive as a flesh and blood character. And he does not arouse interest or sympathy as Wang Lung and O-lan do. (p.

60) It is difficult to sense tragedy here, at least from the way the cover for project graduate story and characters present themselves. The style of Sons follows the same biblical-Chinese saga influence displayed in The Good Earth , and, in general, repeats this pattern beneficially. Referencing Ancient History! Many of the long sweeping sentences are especially lyrical and mellifluous, and numerous passages of thoughtful beauty recur…. School Essay! [However, in] The Good Earth , the style was absorbed in the humanity of the characters and their difficulties; consequently, the style took on a special life and feeling. In Sons , Wang the Tiger does not maintain the same interest to carry along the style with him. Thus, the prose of Sons occasionally seems utilitarian, a mere archaic-flavored ordering and recital of referencing ancient essays events. While it may not actually be determined that Pearl Buck felt her story and people more deeply and plan, more vibrantly in The Good Earth than in Sons , this conclusion is strongly suggested by the style and characterization of Sons . Sons , of course, possesses social and historical value as an illustration of a way of life in China….

The novel also has merit as a pointed, ironic commentary on the differences between generations in the same family…. Referencing History! The individual differences between Wang Lung's sons and their wives display a universality which rings true and answers, is an easily remembered aspect of the story. But, in the final analysis, Sons falls short of The Good Earth because it does not have the same universal quality of timelessness, the referencing same inevitable moment of birth and death, of deloitte assessment essay success and failure, of tragedy and of joy. Universality has been narrowed to the rise of a war lord and the subsequent—but never powerfully felt by the reader—misunderstanding between father and referencing ancient history essays, son. Even the time movement of Wang Lung's descendants seems to sink into secondary significance in the emphasis given to the story of one rather colorless military chief. Ponzi Scheme! (pp. Ancient! 63-4) A House Divided [the final volume of the trilogy], which studies the development of one young man's mind during a turbulent and crucial period of modern Chinese history and also probes the changes wrought in one family over a period of several generations, is answers actually the weakest volume in the House of Earth trilogy. Part of the reason for this situation is that Yuan does not hold the referencing ancient same reader interest as did Wang Lung or even Wang the Tiger. Yuan does not come alive as a believable individual. None of the characters in A House Divided arouses any particular interest; and, while much happens, the events do not involve the reader in attorney development the action. As an examination of one man's mind, A House Divided fails to be appealing primarily because Miss Buck's technique is not thorough and conclusive enough in its introspective probing.

Yuan seems to wear his heart on his sleeve, and referencing, his sudden shifts of emotion and letter for project engineer fresh, feeling are not presented logically…. Miss Buck's technique is more effective in analyzing external events and elements than in presenting internal aspects. Too much explaining of referencing essays Yuan's thoughts and character occurs. (pp. 68-9) The reader is also too conscious of authorial manipulation in attorney plan the handling of Yuan's character. He is referencing ancient a puppet who dances the same tunes on constantly shifting strings, strings which are observed by the audience. The romance between Yuan and Meiling is, for instance, shamelessly managed and xyz homework, rigged by the author…. Further, the book wanders about somewhat aimlessly.

A House Divided treats of a number of places and a number of events, and referencing ancient history essays, its canvas often becomes episodic and unwieldy. Malcolm Cowley has observed that the material in this last volume of the trilogy is too scattered and does not progress to any significant conclusion [see excerpt above]. High! (p. 69) Miss Buck's style, effective in the early scenes when Yuan returns to his grandfather's earthen house, often appears flat and ordinary—a mere recording of referencing events. Deloitte! The prose of A House Divided is, in history general, much too dull and deloitte essay, undistinguished to do more than merely tell a story. Referencing History Essays! A particularly heavy burden is placed on the style to describe internal events; and while at times some poetry filters through the external description, the style is not adequate to the needs of so much internal analysis. (pp. 69-70) A House Divided has appeal as the final view of a family that we have seen at its best and at its worst…. Yet, while [its] events themselves have great significance, the people in A House Divided who participate in them appear awfully pallid and lifeless in comparison. In 1934, between the publication of the second and third volumes of her House of Earth trilogy, Pearl Buck issued one of her most unusual novels, The Mother . This narrative was intended to give a universal portrait of the eternal mother, to research paper present the various cycles of referencing ancient history her life, and to capture some of the timelessness of her existence.

In a sense, this novel was attempting to research paper describe one woman in the same manner that The Good Earth had endeavored to analyze one particular family. (pp. 70-1) The Mother is an extremely important work in the canon of Pearl Buck's writing. The never-ending cycle of birth and death and the eternal round of a mother's life with its joys and sorrows stir the reader because of their proportions and the novelist's insight into life. Here is a portrait of a perennial mother, with universal implications. (pp. 72-3) In many ways The Mother is one of history essays Miss Buck's finest books. It possesses many distinctions: for narrative writing high, example, the ancient essays cyclical flow of time, the eternal mater dolorosa caught in this movement, the tragedies and hardness of existence, the xyz homework mistakes and crises revolving around the life of a mortal woman. Can Writing Be Both True and Beautiful? The author Ethan Canin probes the depths of a single sentence in Saul Bellow’s short story “A Silver Dish.” Two Dark American Truths From Las Vegas. 'It Feels Like Someone Has Opened a Window Into Hell' Why Did the Islamic State Claim the Las Vegas Shooting?

By Heart is a series in which authors share and discuss their all-time favorite passages in literature. Referencing History. See entries from Karl Ove Knausgaard, Jonathan Franzen, Amy Tan, Khaled Hosseini, and more. For Ethan Canin, the author of essay A Doubter’s Almanac , Saul Bellow’s short story “A Silver Dish” is a masterwork. Ancient. The protagonist is a businessman named Woody Selbst who’s unsure of how to mourn his con artist father. Pop didn’t just abandon the xyz homework, family when Woody was a teenager. He tricked his son into becoming an accomplice in his escape—a cruel ruse that permanently thwarted Woody’s ambitions in the process. In our conversation for history this series, Canin explained that his favorite part comes at the very end. As Pop pulls off one last con on his deathbed, Woody’s coming-to-terms is deloitte, expressed in a simple final sentence: “That was how he was.” We discussed how Bellow infuses five ordinary words with such uncanny power; why endings should make us feel, not think; and what “A Silver Dish” teaches about referencing ancient essays dialogue, plot, and character. A Doubter’s Almanac is a family saga about the attorney business, destructive power of genius, and ancient essays, like “A Silver Dish” it concerns a complex father/son legacy. It’s the answers, story of a groundbreaking mathematician from northern Michigan, whose brilliance is only equaled by his capacity for betrayal and violence. A cast of long-suffering characters support the celebrated work, including the referencing ancient essays, son who fears he’s inherited his father’s gifts and penchant for self-destruction.

In 1998, Ethan Canin left medicine to teach fiction at writing the Iowa Writers’ Workshop (where he was my professor). Referencing History. The best-selling author of the story collections Emperor of the attorney development plan, Air and The Palace Thief, and novels including America America and For Kings and Planets , his fiction has been published in The New Yorker , The Atlantic , and The Best American Short Stories . We spoke at referencing essays a coffee shop in downtown Manhattan. Ethan Canin: When I went for my medical school interview, I had an attorney business old paperback of Henderson the Rain King in the pocket of referencing history my coat. I was wearing the best clothes I had, a pair of medical school conclusion cords and a sport coat—but when I got to the office, all the other interviewees were lined up in their black suits. As they stood there talking about whether they preferred intravenous versus oral chemotherapy, I thought, “Oh my god, I’m about to get myself into history essays the wrong line of work.” But when I went in for the interview, the guy noticed I had a book in my jacket pocket. He asked what I was reading, and when I took it out, he said, “Oh, that’s my favorite book.” All we did was talk about Henderson the Rain King . I think that’s how I got into cover letter for project engineer medical school. I think Bellow’s the greatest American writer of his century, personally.

When I read him, I’m in awe. One of referencing history my favorite works is the great short story “A Silver Dish,” a story not too many people seem to know. It ends with, for me, one of the most memorable lines in fiction: That was how he was. There are five words in that sentence, each one essentially meaningless: T hat was how he was . Two of them are the medical school essay, same word: “was” and “was.” Hardly any sounds even, in those words, there’s no tilt, no break, no angle to the rhythm—just tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. Of all those words, only “he” and perhaps “was” have any sort of meaning. “How” is ancient, technically an adverb the medical school, way it’s used here but feels more nounish to history essays me, in the sense that I get a little visual spark when I read it, entirely from what has come before in the story. The whole sentence uses only cover for project engineer seven distinct letters, and ancient history, contains only 15 letters total: three a’s, three h’s, three w’s, two s’s, two t’s, an ponzi scheme paper o, and an e. It’s an amazingly restrained line from Bellow, who was a poet of the first order. Ancient Essays. I think he was intentionally restricting his palette. Compare it to some of his other great sentences, like the answers, famous first line of ancient essays The Adventures of Augie March : I am an American, Chicago born—Chicago, that somber city—and go at things as I have taught myself, free-style, and will make the record in my own way: first to knock, first admitted; sometimes an innocent knock, sometimes a not so innocent. You can open that book up to business development page 400 and find the best sentence you’ve ever seen.

It’s an astonishing, volcanic eruption of ideas and language. Or take this section from history essays, “A Silver Dish,” when Woody takes a streetcar ride that leads him to the story’s culminating moment: What he heard and saw was an old red Chicago streetcar, one of those trams the color of narrative writing high a stockyard steer. Cars of this type went out ancient essays before Pearl Harbor—clumsy, big-bellied, with tough rattan seats and brass grips for the standing passengers. Those cars used to make four stops to centre essay the mile, and ran with a wallowing motion. Referencing Ancient. They stank of carbolic or ozone and centre, throbbed when the air compressors were being charged. The conductor had his knotted signal cord to pull, and the motorman beat the foot gong with his mad heel. That passage is full of referencing history visceral, Anglo-Saxon words, and every single one of centre those words means something instantly.

I think that’s what poets try to do: They try to sidestep neurology and go straight to meaning. But the last line of ancient “A Silver Dish,” is nothing like that. I can’t tell you what any single one of those words means. Imagine you’re a lexicographer and you have to define the scheme, word that , or how. And on top of this, there’s none of Bellow’s typical play with rhythm and language—it’s almost a non-sentence. And yet, when I get to it in referencing the story, I weep.

I’ve read the business development plan, story three times in the past few weeks, and each time I arrived at referencing essays that sentence, tears came to my eyes. How does Bellow pack so much emotion into those five ordinary words? I think it’s their very blankness that allows them to channel so much emotion. Because they don’t bring anything specific to mind, they allow us to deloitte assessment essay feel without thinking. At the end of a story or novel, you do not want the referencing, reader thinking. Endings are about emotion, and logic is emotion’s enemy.

It’s the writer’s job to disarm the reader of his logic, to letter for project fresh just make the ancient history essays, reader feel. You’ll often see this in the final moments of a film: The camera tilts up, and the movie ends with a non-distinct image of the sky, or the sea, or the narrative assignments high school, coast. Something the eye can’t quite focus on, which allows you to referencing ancient focus on everything that’s come before. Narrative Assignments. That’s how “that was how he was” works, too. It brings nothing else to mind. This sentence would be a non-sentence if it began the story—but, placed at the end, it’s packed with the charge of everything that precedes it. Each of those non-words is nitroglycerin, and the story that precedes it is the ancient, fuse. At the xyz homework answers, end of a story or novel, you do not want the essays, reader thinking. Endings are about cover letter fresh graduate emotion, and referencing ancient history, logic is narrative writing school, emotion’s enemy.

To me, this line also shows that content trumps style. I have a theory about writing, which is that you cannot simultaneously write something true about history essays character and, at the same time, write something linguistically beautiful. There are too few words to express both truth and business development, beauty, so most empathetic—or another way to say this might be character-driven writers—tend to naturally reserve their beautiful constructions for when the content is less urgent. You’ll see Bellow get poetic when he’s writing about the scenery, like when Woody and his dad take that streetcar ride. But when he’s trying to write something that really gets to the narrator’s deep emotional experience, the prose is mostly very simple: That was how he was. Five plain words.

At the crux of the story it pays to write what’s true, rather than try to write what’s true and referencing history, then dilute that by making the narrative writing assignments school, prose beautiful. It’s a continuum, of course, but I don’t think you can be at both ends of the continuum. For me, I should also say, this story answers almost every question a young writer could have about fiction writing. That dialogue is conflict, for instance. Bellow doesn’t write down a word of dialogue unless people are fighting.

As I always say to my students about dialogue in fiction: If you can’t say something nasty, don’t say anything at all. Or that any story about referencing essays death must be a story about medical school essay life. Or how to approach one of the most difficult things for literary writers: plot. In a way, plot is very simple: You have someone do something wrong. You don’t plan out referencing history a plot. You have somebody do something wrong, and that engenders other bad behavior. Behavior—especially bad behavior—is what forces character to emerge. When “A Silver Dish” begins, it’s remarkably static: Woody, pierced by the sound of church bells all over Chicago, is mourning his father, a lifetime of old memories and impressions washing over him.

But the story snaps into sudden focus when he recalls one of his father’s transgressions, a betrayal that’s haunted the younger man all his life. It’s that individual transgression—that memorable instance of bad behavior—that gets the story rolling. I think of that moment as the story standing up . The moment when the black lines on the page suddenly become a story. I’ve heard [the Deadwood creator] David Milch say (though I might be butchering it slightly) that it’s easier to plot your way into an idea than it is to idea your way into a plot. And I think a lot of writers start out making the mistake of ponzi paper trying to write a novel about something. Novels are discussed as though they are intentionally about something, but they’re not. They’re stories. We’re taught to ancient history essays think about them that way by literary critics, or by research English teachers, who are, in their defense, generally trying to teach you to write a paragraph rather than a novel. But to be a writer, I think, you have to abandon the ancient history, idea that fiction is “about” something. This concept is bad enough in narrative writing assignments high your reading life. But it’s fatal in your writing life.

I’ve seen plenty of students come in and say, I want to history write a novel about blah blah blah . But you just can’t do it. Attorney Business. You can only write a novel about a character who does something wrong, and see what happens from there. Ancient History Essays. Novels are compendiums of bad behavior, and literature is the gossip about it. In other words, if you’re writing a piece of fiction, I’d urge you not to try to show anything—instead, try to discover something. Development Plan. There’s no way to write anything powerful unless your unconscious takes charge. I think of that moment as the history, story standing up. The moment when the medical conclusion, black lines on the page suddenly become a story. The biggest problem for young literary writers, besides plot, is how to characterize: how to make a character seem like a real human being. One of the more subtle ways, which Bellow does beautifully, is to have a character describe other people.

The trick is that when characters describe other people, it’s they themselves who are being revealed. In this section of “A Silver Dish,” Woody’s description of his father, gives a sense of his own diction, articulation, and philosophy: Pop, as he took his sheepskin off, was in sweaters, no jacket. Ancient History Essays. His darting looks made him seem crooked. Hardest of all for these Selbsts with their bent noses and big, apparently straightforward faces was to medical essay conclusion look honest. All the signs of dishonesty played over them. Woody had often puzzled about it. Referencing Ancient History. Did it go back to the muscles, was it fundamentally a jaw problem—the projecting angles of the jaws?

Or was it the angling that went on in the heart? It’s physical description and medical school essay, self-contemplation and contemplation of others, all at the same time. As Woody meditates on his father’s inherently crooked appearance, we get a sense of Woody, too: that he is in some ways an upright, noble, kind man but also has a sense of his own unworthiness, his own brutishness—a sense that he himself is as crookedly bent as his father. Writers tend to think that their own prose is the compelling thing. You have to strangle that off, I think. Talk about killing your darlings. It’s not just about killing your good scenes , it’s about killing your instinct to try to impress with witticism and handsome phrasing—becoming, instead, a vessel for telepathy in a way. Ancient. The less present you can be, the more you can be the character you’re trying to write about. Medical School. Some of the writers I admire most—like Philip Roth or Alice Munro—they’re beautiful prose stylists in the sense that their sentences are lovely, but as I read them I’m not thinking about the prose. I’m thinking about the truth.

I’m lost in their ability to make me into another human being. That, to me, is the compelling thing. With characterization, you have to let go. Referencing History Essays. You’ve got to release yourself from your grandiose intentions, your ambitions, your ideas about humanity, literature, and philosophy by focusing on the being-another-person aspect of it—which, by the way, is freeing, delightful, and one of the few real joys of writing. Stop worrying about writing a great novel—just become another human being. I should add that, to centre a remarkable degree, it’s a physical thing.

I try to referencing ancient essays do it by pausing for a moment before I begin writing, by letter fresh graduate taking a few seconds at the beginning to referencing history essays let my self drop away. I also find that restrained bits of physical activity help. I have a standing desk—which I have to say, I built myself long before it became fashionable. School Essay Conclusion. That works for me. I also put in one of those mini elliptical trainers below it, the kind without handrails, so that I have to referencing essays concentrate a little to not fall off. I’ll start to walk. And as I try to balance, trying not to topple to writing assignments high school the side, I’m starting to type—somehow the slight physical activity takes the brakes off. Referencing Ancient History. In the same way, I often get good ideas when I’m driving a stickshift car: The shifting requires just enough concentration that it unglues your inhibitions.

It allows your unconscious to bubble up. With characterization, you have to let go. Stop worrying about writing a great novel—just become another human being. Ultimately, I read for attorney business development the sensation of being another character. That’s how I know a book is referencing ancient essays, good, when I can no longer tell that I’m reading a book, when I become not a reader but another human being. I read for that sensation of transport, and I write for that sensation, too. I had this weird experience once. I was on letter stage, I think at referencing history the Kansas City Public Library. Some kind of on-stage conversation.

And the first question the interviewer asked me was: What’s the purpose of literature? Imagine getting that question unannounced . And out of my mouth popped: “It’s a rehearsal for death.” I’d never thought about narrative high that before I said it, but in some ways I think it’s true. Fiction’s about running through other people’s lives, running through the great and terrible things that happen along the referencing, way, and especially the thing that lies at the end, experiencing it over and over xyz homework answers and over. Whether or not a novel actually contains death, it’s often about the referencing ancient history essays, highlights of a life. Literature allows us to experience thousands of lives, to understand how we might want to live our own. But back to “A Silver Dish.” There’s a little mystery in this story: Twice, Bellow slips out of third person and into first. “He wanted me like himself, an school essay American,” the narrator says, at one point. Is it some sort of referencing ancient essays meta-fiction, as if Bellow anticipated the current trend of narrators having the same names as their authors? I don’t know what to make of xyz homework those two little shifts in point of history view, unless they’re little tacit admissions that this story is indeed about him.

Some kind of winking admission that this is narrative writing assignments high school, I, Saul Bellow, and not Woody. Whatever it is, “A Silver Dish” gives us profound access to the life of another. For me, that’s what great fiction is: the window through to someone else’s days on earth. That was how he was. It’s all of referencing literature, isn’t it?

Or pretty damn close. What If Everyone Ate Beans Instead of Beef? What can an answers individual do about climate change? The easiest answer: make this one dietary switch. Two Dark American Truths From Las Vegas.

Again. In the history essays, crucial early hours after the Las Vegas mass shooting, it happened again: Hoaxes, completely unverified rumors, failed witch hunts, and blatant falsehoods spread across the internet. That was three years ago, and Stewart is long gone, but his legacy is the stable of comedians on late-night television who use the news not just to ancient history entertain, but to advocate. It’s gotten harder. Increasingly, over the last three years, Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, Seth Meyers, James Corden, Conan O’Brien, even Jimmy Fallon, even, yes, Jimmy Kimmel, have been handed an unflinching cavalcade of horrors to turn into humor. They’ve experimented with sincerity, with sadness, with satire, with moral outrage, with faith, and most recently—in Kimmel’s case—with fury. The tempestuous presidency of Donald Trump has provided them with plenty to laugh at. Writing Assignments High. And plenty to despair. Why Did the Islamic State Claim the Las Vegas Shooting? Assessing the group’s puzzling statement.

This morning, the Islamic State’s semi-official news agency, Amaq, took credit for the Las Vegas massacre, which killed 58 and wounded another 515. The likely killer, identified by referencing essays police as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, was not known to be a supporter of the Islamic State, or indeed a Muslim of any type. Narrative Writing Assignments School. For now, the only evidence that the Islamic State was involved is its own assurance—first a press release announcing that a “soldier of the Islamic State” executed the concertgoers, and history, a follow-up for development the baffled, explaining that he converted to Islam months ago. Evidence will be forthcoming, and these assertions by the Islamic State will be tested against referencing ancient history essays, reality. But already I hear a familiar chorus of doubt: The Islamic State will “take credit for anything,” it says, “even hurricanes.” Did Manafort Use Trump to Curry Favor With a Putin Ally? Emails turned over to investigators detail the former campaign chair's efforts to please an oligarch tied to the Kremlin. On the evening of answers April 11, 2016, two weeks after Donald Trump hired the political consultant Paul Manafort to lead his campaign’s efforts to wrangle Republican delegates, Manafort emailed his old lieutenant Konstantin Kilimnik, who had worked for him for a decade in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. “I assume you have shown our friends my media coverage, right?” Manafort wrote. “Absolutely,” Kilimnik responded a few hours later from history, Kiev. This Is What a Real Middle-Class Tax Cut Would Look Like. Getting money into the pockets of ordinary Americans is referencing ancient history, easy. Gary Cohn, the White House’s chief economic adviser, says the president’s tax cut is “purely aimed at middle-class families.” Steve Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, promised Congress that tax reform wouldn’t benefit the rich.

The lack of spectacle came off like a power move: Can you believe we have these songs ? A Presidential Speech Steeped in ancient essays Hypocrisy. He exaggerated his wealth, his success, his physical fitness, but he never pretended to development plan religion or morality. Trump’s speech to the nation after the Las Vegas atrocity, however, was steeped in hypocrisy. He is the least outwardly religious president of modern times, the president least steeped in scripture. If guns aren’t a problem, why does the U.S. have so many more shootings than any other country?

For all its use, “thoughts and prayers” doesn’t appear to have produced a quantifiable reduction in the rates of gun violence. Over years of mass murders in the United States, the aphorism has become a statement of referencing ancient history unwillingness to address causes or prevention—the justification being that during a period of mourning, no substantive remarks should be made.
