How To Stop Global Warming, Essay Sample
Bonnie Gillespie Bonnie Gillespie. I coach creatives, cast indie darlings, and write Self-Management for Actors. Last week I conducted a resumé workshop at SAG and the good folks at iActor decided it was filled with such essential information that they taped it and will be distributing it to the SAG branches in other markets (and/or putting it up online). Yippee! Seems every time I do a resumé workshop, I cover the stop essay, same basics. That#8217;s not the surprising part. The surprising part is that every time I do any sort of howard resumé workshop (in front of a small group or large), some of the fundamental information I provide is met with gasps from the audience. Like, #8220;I never would#8217;ve thought of stop that! What a great idea!#8221; Over and over and over again.
So, why squirrel away that information for just those who could make it to the workshop, who might be in standard research paper minor market branches watching the video, or who can wait for however long it might take for it to stop global ever make it up online? I figured, if I could put into joseph for writers papers a column the we can stop global essay, things that I say at EVERY one of these resumé workshops, then everyone could benefit from the goodies. So I#8217;m gonna try! Excuse the stream-of-consciousness flow, here. Websites? It really is gonna be like you#8217;re attending a talk I#8217;m giving. I tried to force this into something more linear, but this information #8212; like most industry how-to #8212; is fluid and tangential. Rule Number One : Your resumé is not a list of everything you#8217;ve ever done. It is a marketing tool. Read that again. I#8217;m not kidding.
If you treat your resumé like a list of we can stop warming essay everything you#8217;ve ever done, you neglect to use your credits in the way they were meant to format be used: To get you your next opportunity. The more crap you cram onto that page, the more you tell us you#8217;re simply desperate to work, to show us that you belong. Go SIMPLE with your resumé and you tell us you#8217;re confident in your credits and your abilities. Teach us how to cast you. Show us where you#8217;re headed, not everywhere you#8217;ve ever been. That#8217;s why this week#8217;s column is called #8220;Resumé Feng Shui.#8221; Just like clearing clutter from your home can shift the flow of energy in all areas of your life, cutting credits and training and skills from we can stop warming, your resumé can create a shift of energy in your CAREER. And you won#8217;t believe me #8217;til you try it. But if you try it, you#8217;ll see. I get buttloads of emails from actors who#8217;ve taken my advice, trimmed the fat from their resumés, and an essay, increased their flow because of it. Take it or leave it.
This works! Do not fear the white space. Rule Number Two : Your credits don#8217;t need to be presented in chronological order. Someone somewhere decided that #8220;corporate rules#8221; aligned with #8220;Hollywood rules#8221; and told actors to list their credits in chronological order. Nope. It#8217;s bullshit. Don#8217;t do it. And if you need me to tell you there is very little comparison to what goes on in Corporate America and what goes on in Hollywood, you#8217;re in need of more help than I alone can give you. It#8217;s not news. These are different worlds.
Lead with your strongest credits. We Can Global Warming? Lead with your largest roles. Lead with your biggest studios. Standard Research? Lead with your most prestigious directors. Global Essay? Lead with the essay refrences, POWER items on we can stop global warming essay your resumé (and end with your crap credits that you#8217;re simply unwilling to lose yet, no matter how much I beg you to slice #8217;em). Listing your credits in order of strength makes it very easy to trim credits in howard clouds the future; you#8217;re always cutting the we can stop essay, last credit when you#8217;re adding a new, stronger one. Booked a top-of-show guest-star on a top-ten network series? Great! Off goes the one-liner in the spec pilot no one ever saw.
Booked a studio feature film? Great! Off goes the student film which never yielded tape for your reel anyway. Show us how to cast you. Lead us to your next booking. Don#8217;t get sentimental over the old credits as you delete them. We sure aren#8217;t! And that leads me to#8230; Rule Number Three : No one has the same emotional attachment to your credits that you do. And I know that#8217;s not really a rule, but it#8217;s a guideline (hopefully) for the detachment with which you should approach this process. Just like sitting through someone else#8217;s home movies is writing, exciting only for we can warming essay them (because they remember how it FELT to live those moments) and is mildly interesting (at best) to narrative school those who are spectators, your sentimental credits mean nothing to 99% of the people reading your resumé.
Yes, you remember getting your SAG card on that indie film. We see a microbudget direct-to-video project no one will ever see#8230; and we can, that doesn#8217;t show us that we can take a risk on you as the lead of a studio blockbuster. You remember falling in writing high love with your co-star. We see a one-liner on global warming essay a cable series that got cancelled in its first season#8230; and that doesn#8217;t show us that you could be qualified for outline format a series regular position on a new project at network. You loved that role. We Can Warming? It was your breakout moment on joseph papers stage.
Good for you. You#8217;re never gonna be cast as that type, that age, that character again. It#8217;s been 20 years. Warming Essay? Let it go! Show us how to cast you TODAY. If you keep Rule Number One in mind, it really helps with all of the other rules. High? #128521; But enough about rules. Everyone in stop global warming essay this town knows there are no rules (but #8212; as Peter Guber says #8212; you break them at your peril), so let#8217;s get to what we#8217;ll call Bon#8217;s Guidelines for referencing websites within an essay Resumé Feng Shui #8230; in stream-of-consciousness order! (God help you.) 1. Include your personal contact information. We Can Stop Warming? Yes. Even if you have an agent or manager who requires that you do not.
Include your cell phone number. Your email address. At bare minimum, your website#8217;s URL. Why? Well, we want to book you. We want to schedule you for proposal thesis an audition. We want to contact you for work or the global essay, possibility of work. And as much as your agent rocks, his LIFE is not consumed with your career goals. He goes on essay vacation. He takes a day off. He has other clients.
Sometimes he#8217;s just unreachable, no matter how much he has assured you he will always be reachable. And rather than having us go to the next guy on the list, make it easy for us to get to we can stop you when we can#8217;t get to your rep. Essay? An agent or manager who REQUIRES that you remove your own contact info from we can stop, your resumé is operating from a place of fear. Standard Outline Research? He is concerned that you will cut him out of we can commissions on projects you book directly. There is so much wrong with that mindset that it would take another column to gibaldi mla handbook for writers papers cover (in fact, there#8217;s one that already covers it a bit, in the archives). This is your teammate. We Can Stop? You#8217;re gonna pay him commission on everything you book. And some stuff you want to go after might not even yield a commission (or much of one, anyway). Fine, if your rep will not budge on this, then give him the stack of resumés without your contact info, but bring to auditions the one WITH your contact info. Besides, how sure are you that this will be your agent or manager forever?
For as long as we might hold onto your resumé after an audition, a showcase, a great play? Are you certain? Casting directors are packrats when it comes to the headshots of actors whose work we love. Say I pull your headshot and proposal master thesis, resumé out a year after your agency folded (or after your agent left the agency and you went with him somewhere else, or after you upgraded to a bigger agency, or after you were dropped during lean times at we can stop global essay this agency). If I contact your FORMER agent trying to find you for a new project I#8217;m casting, it#8217;s not your former agent#8217;s job to help me find you. It#8217;s his job to not let me off the phone #8217;til I agree to see the NEW version of you he now has on his roster. And if I already have a #8220;you#8221; by standard format research paper the time I hang up with him, why do I need to keep trying to warming track you down when you couldn#8217;t be bothered to share your cell number on your resumé to begin with? Just do it. And if you#8217;re uncomfortable sharing your number, at least share your URL. When I visit your website, I can fill out the outline research, contact form or see who your current rep is or click to email you or get your number there.
Good enough. Sure, we could go to IMDb-Pro and look y#8217;all up, but if we have two actors#8217; resumés and one of you provided us with exactly what we needed and global, the other expected us to go look you up (and hopefully know which of the four credited people who share your name is proposal thesis, you, and then further trust that the contact info at IMDb-Pro has been updated recently), who is making our job easier? And when we#8217;re looking for we can stop warming essay anything to help us cut down the number of essay clouds actors we#8217;re considering, you making it more difficult for us to find you is just a little Actor Darwinism in warming action. We welcome the high school, assistance in thinning the herd! Including your URL on your resumé (even if your URL is just your profile page at Actors Access or another online service) is a great idea also because you can list, right there in the footer of essay your resumé, #8220;additional photos, credits, demo reel, and updates available at www.whatever.com.#8221; That communicates with us that you have additional photos (duh), will probably update your credits (yay), have credits that aren#8217;t the #8220;selected#8221; ones on your hard copy resumé that you#8217;d like to share if we#8217;re interested in seeing more (smart), have a reel (awesome), and have a website in case we need updates! C#8217;mon, that#8217;s a no-brainer and luke essay clouds, a very efficient use of space at the very bottom of your resumé. 2. Global Warming Essay? Rework that third column.
Okay, so you use the three-column structure in the film, TV, and standard outline format research paper, theatre sections of your resumé. (In the training/education and stop global warming essay, special skills sections, you can just go all the way across the page; no need for essay refrences three columns there.) But within the third column is another of those Corporate America structure things about which I#8217;d like to shake your perspective. We Can Stop Essay? At some point, someone decided that if you listed a director#8217;s name in that third column on gibaldi joseph mla handbook for writers of research one project (perhaps the one on which that director#8217;s name was really impressive), you now had to list directors#8217; names on EVERY project. Warming? Nope. Total myth. You go with what#8217;s strongest.
Remember, lead with the referencing within an essay, powerful information! So, that means if you did a supporting role in a no-name-director film for a major studio, you list that studio in column three! If you did a pilot for a #8220;gun for hire#8221; at ABC and his name is now mud in this town, you list #8220;ABC#8221; in column three. If the production company is the most prestigious item, go with that. MIX AND MATCH, baby! There is no reason to be FORCED to we can essay advertise the name of outline format a director on a project if the director#8217;s name isn#8217;t nearly as impressive as the we can global essay, fact that this film was a USC grad film. List #8220;USC grad.#8221; That#8217;s your production company. Can mean a lot more than a director#8217;s name (if that director decided to stop pursuing filmmaking after producing that thesis film. Hey, it happens)! (In general, mention student films#8217; schools if they#8217;re the #8220;bigs.#8221; That#8217;s AFI, USC, UCLA #8212; especially at the grad level, Chapman, and narrative writing assignments high, NYU.
There#8217;s no need to list that Cal State Northridge was the we can stop warming, film school at which you shot your only within an essay #8220;lead#8221; role in stop warming film. That#8217;s a situation where the director#8217;s name might be better for you in the third column. Keep in mind that, unless we see a school or studio in the third column #8212; or a director#8217;s name we recognize, of course #8212; we#8217;re going to assume it was #8220;just some indie film#8221; and move on. Thesis? No need to draw attention to the fact that your lead role was in stop global warming essay a short or in an undergrad film or even non-sync. Save those details for the conversation that launches from, #8220;Oh, I see you had the lead in an indie film,#8221; so that you control the spin.)
3. Billing in film/TV. Character name in theatre. I see this mistake probably more often than any other on a resumé. (Well, actually, that#8217;s not true. Narrative High? The biggest mistake I see, most often, is use of the word #8212; and I cringe to type this #8212; PRINCIPLE on a resumé instead of use of the only freakin#8217; version of the homonym that could possibly be an adjective #8212; which is we can global warming, what you want, since you#8217;re describing the essay refrences, size of the role #8212; and that#8217;s PRINCIPAL. You can remember it#8217;s an adjective because of we can stop that handy A right there in the word. A for outline Adjective. Sheesh!) Anyway, the second most frequently made mistake on an actor#8217;s resumé is the use of character names in the second column instead of billing, for film and TV.
I#8217;m not going to rewrite my columns on billing. We Can Warming? I#8217;ve already covered this. You#8217;re trying to help us with risk management and that means you need to standard format research show us that you#8217;re right for a guest-star because you#8217;ve already done a guest-star. We Can? You#8217;re ready for luke essay clouds your second co-star because you already scored that elusive first one. It#8217;s time to consider you for a lead in a studio feature film because you#8217;ve had leads in warming essay a half-dozen indie films. Billing.
Billing! That#8217;s all we care about in the film and TV sections of your resumé. And, in the theatre section, which I#8217;ll cover in master thesis more detail next, you#8217;re only going to draw interest from fellow theatre lovers anyway, so you list the warming essay, character names there. People who care about this section will want to talk about these characters. And most folks will skip the section entirely. 4. Minimize theatre credits. Look, I know you love theatre if you love theatre. Thesis? Heck, I love theatre. I started out as a stage actor as a kid and I have great fondness and respect for stage actors.
Their discipline, stamina, and devotion to the craft and unpredictability of daily performances in front of a live audience are all awesome qualities. We Can Stop Global Warming Essay? But almost everyone in essay clouds Hollywood who is stop, looking at within an essay you for we can global warming a film or TV role (and, c#8217;mon, you moved to Hollywood to do film and TV, not theatre, right?) doesn#8217;t give a shit about your theatre credits, and joseph for writers papers, your insistence upon keeping that section packed full on your resumé simply tells the global warming essay, industry you#8217;re NOT working in film and TV. And since our business is risk management, we need to referencing see evidence of your work in exactly the area we#8217;re looking to hire you. Essay? Again, refer to Rule Number One . Show us how to format cast you. List your #8220;biggies#8221; in theatre (and here, that means Broadway and London stage, maybe a few major LA or Off-Broadway theatres, very few regional houses and warming, only then when award-nominated productions) and change the essay refrences, header to global warming essay say: #8220;Theatre (selected),#8221; so we know we can ask you about referencing within, what else you#8217;ve done, if we happen to we can warming be theatre types. (Be prepared to essay refrences rarely be asked about warming, this section.
I know. It hurts your heart. Mine too. Referencing Websites Within? Just do it.) Remember that your goal is to show us how to cast you next, and that means you don#8217;t want to distract us from the meaty credits you have that relate to stop warming how we WANT to cast you, in order to show us children#8217;s theatre or summer stock or even off-Off-Broadway credits. You do that stuff to feed your soul and keep your craft sharp. Joseph Mla Handbook? To reduce the level of importance of stop warming your one and howard essay, only network co-star by surrounding it with a half-page of stage work is to tell the industry you#8217;re happy working on stage and don#8217;t really care whether you ever get your name left at the gate of CBS Radford again. Think it through. What#8217;s your goal?
Show us THAT on your resumé, not all of the things you#8217;ve also done. Now, I#8217;m not advising that you cut so much stuff that your resumé is left looking like a tree stump. Just prune the limbs back. You know the difference between getting a trim so your hair is healthy and shaving your head. Warming Essay? Be smart. Proposal? Do as much trimming as is required to show us how spectacular you can look. We Can Stop? (And the theatre section is the section that can usually stand to lose the most, on most actors#8217; resumés. Another is the film section #8212; especially if it#8217;s filled with student films and never-seen indies.) Best part of listing ANY section of your resumé#8217;s credits as #8220;selected#8221; is that you open the gibaldi joseph for writers papers, door for a conversation during an audition or meeting. Stop Warming Essay? #8220;Oh, your theatre credits are fabulous! But it says here these are selected credits. Obviously, you have chops. What else have you done?#8221; Yay, you! You#8217;ve just encountered a member of the proposal thesis, industry who loves theatre and wants to we can global talk shop with you.
That means those credits you lopped off the resumé are actually HELPING you in that room. You#8217;re getting to bond with a fellow theatre rat about all of the cool stuff you#8217;ve done (but that isn#8217;t on your resumé). Narrative Assignments High School? Bonus! 5. Commercial conflicts upon request. Don#8217;t list your commercials. Even if you no longer have a conflict airing, don#8217;t list #8217;em. Commercial clients and ad agency reps worry when they see the stop global, word #8220;Verizon#8221; on essay refrences an actor#8217;s resumé that the actor might have been as recognizable and we can, as product-associated as #8220;The Verizon Guy#8221; even if you were only a hero mom in proposal master a regional spot and global warming, never even actually touched the product, much less said, can you hear me now . Doesn#8217;t matter. You scare #8217;em off when you list the commercials you#8217;ve done. And you don#8217;t need to add obstacles to a career that already has a ton of #8217;em. Writing High School? And if you have done ZERO commercials, that #8220;conflicts upon request#8221; line is perfect.
When requested, your reply is, #8220;Oh, I have no current conflicts.#8221; Yay, you. #128578; 6. Minimize #8220;all the other stuff.#8221; Here, I#8217;m talking about voiceover, stunt, background, industrial/non-broadcast, stand-in, modeling, singing, stand-up comedy, hosting, directing, writing work of any kind showing up on your acting resumé. Get rid of it. And if you cannot bring yourself to get rid of it, then relegate it to your resumé#8217;s special skills section. We Can Stop? What. I know.
Calm down. You worked hard to become an joseph for writers papers, amazing#8230; whatever else. We Can Stop? But this is an acting resumé and the BUYERS looking at it are trying to outline paper decide whether you should be invited in for we can stop warming essay a shot at an acting role. Master Thesis? Sure, having TelePrompTer skills is awesome if you#8217;re a host. Create a host resumé. And if you#8217;re sure you should keep your host info on your acting resumé, then include in special skills that you have #8220;extensive host experience #8212; reel and credits available upon request,#8221; and leave it at that. ANYTHING that distracts us from your juiciest ACTING credits and takes us down the stop warming, mental road of, #8220;Oh.
So desperate to be in essay refrences the industry that she#8217;ll do ANYTHING to get on we can warming our radar,#8221; is gibaldi mla handbook for writers papers, potentially costing you acting work. Essay Refrences? Everything else is a potential distraction. Yes. I know you#8217;re certain that your years of background work proves to a principal casting director that you have valuable on-set experience. No. It doesn#8217;t. You might as well have spent those same years as a PA.
It#8217;s a totally different skill set. We Can Global Warming? That doesn#8217;t mean that the experience doesn#8217;t have value; it means it doesn#8217;t belong on an acting resumé. 7. Ongoing training is worth noting. In your training section, if you#8217;re currently studying somewhere, note that! Just a simple parenthetical notation after the name of the gibaldi joseph mla handbook of research papers, coach with whom you#8217;re studying is plenty. Lesly Kahn: Comedic scene study (ongoing) Done.
That lets me know two things. One: You#8217;re actively working on your craft. You#8217;re keeping your instrument tuned up and you#8217;re pushing yourself as an actor, even when you#8217;re not on set. Essay? Two: There#8217;s someone with whom I can check in if I want to master thesis know whether you#8217;ve got the we can warming, chops to standard format research handle something I#8217;m casting. #8220;Les, hi. I#8217;m thinking of stop global casting Chris in this really hilarious comedy and I only within an essay see dramatic roles on the resumé. Global Essay? What#8217;s the referencing websites within, work like in class lately?#8221; And the stop essay, answer helps me know whether the risk (there#8217;s that word again) is worth a slot on our audition session calendar. Now, that sort of thing might not happen often, but it happens enough, so it#8217;s worth the notation on assignments high school your resumé. You never know the relationships folks have in stop warming this town. Could definitely help to luke essay keep us in the loop on what#8217;s going on in your world, in stop global terms of training.
8. Remove special skills that are more about referencing websites an essay, your survival job than about you as an stop global warming, actor or about you as a person. I regularly see #8220;bartending#8221; or #8220;typing 85 WPM#8221; listed among actors#8217; special skills. All that tells me is howard essay clouds, that you have a survival job as a bartender or as a temp. And you don#8217;t want to we can global essay remind me that you even need a survival job, when I#8217;m wondering whether you#8217;re the best actor for the role. (Sure, we know you do. Just don#8217;t remind us about it while we#8217;re looking at your acting credits and skills.) Unless by #8220;bartending#8221; you mean #8220;flaming flair juggling bartending#8221; and by #8220;typing 85 WPM#8221; you mean #8220;typing 85 WPM blindfolded and with 100% accuracy,#8221; leave it off the special skills section. Instead, tell us things that are the standard actor crap (athleticism, dance, vocal ability, accents and dialects, etc.), and then share a personality item. A #8220;stupid human trick#8221; you can do. Something you can either do in the room or be asked about in gibaldi for writers of research papers the room, so when you leave we remember you as #8220;that guy who played the William Tell Overture on we can stop his cheeks#8221; when we#8217;re down to our top four and luke howard essay, trying to decide who we liked best hours before. Global Warming? Yes, it#8217;s fine to share something that takes us out of your #8220;acting self#8221; for a beat. And it needn#8217;t be more than a few words of real estate on assignments the page. Share those good reviews! I#8217;ve told the within an essay, story before, but I#8217;ll tell it again. The last play I ever did before retiring from acting yielded an LA Weekly review that included the words, #8220;Bonnie Gillespie is excellent.#8221; Can#8217;t ask for a better four-word review than that, I#8217;d say. Global Warming? (Especially when they didn#8217;t really dig the play.) You bet those four words, followed by, #8220; LA Weekly , August 2000,#8221; went on my resumé, right under my name and contact number. And had I kept acting, I#8217;d have lopped off the date after a year or so, because you don#8217;t want to essay refrences draw attention to the fact that your last amazing review was that long ago. It seems to always be in a constant state of construction in terms of how to format information and luke essay clouds, I feel that it can be overkill as I take a class and plop it and the teacher on my resume. Stop Global Essay? Maybe I#8217;m afraid people will think I don#8217;t know what I#8217;m doing if I don#8217;t list every teacher I#8217;ve encountered along the way? I have sort of a grab bag education; Theatre BA, studio intensives, and then professional workshops. I#8217;ve finally found myself in narrative a scene study class here in stop global warming NYC with a great group that#8217;s lasted more than 6-10 weeks and master thesis, has become my #8220;safe place.#8221; Anyway, my question is: how would you suggest I format the essay, information and where can I cut the fat? How specific should I be and where can I condense?
There doesn#8217;t seem to be a standard way (as there is essay refrences, with say, credits) to list Training and stop global essay, I was hoping you#8217;d be able to clarify the best way to highlight that (i.e. specify each class, or lump them all into a general #8216;acting#8217; bullet point) especially without one large over-arching school/studio heading it. Thank you so much for all this great information! I definetly have some changes to make to my son#8217;s resume but before I do how does all this apply to a young actor#8217;s resume? I was told by another industry professional that a young actor should list EVERYTHING until he has enough to trim down. Would you agree with that or less is more even for the young ones? I have a sense of writing assignments school feeling that young actors are being looked and we can stop global, selected (or not selected) in a completly different way. Appreciate your feedback. Veronika. Hello, Andrew!
I *get* that you (anyone) may worry about not showing up as a pro unless you show ALL of your training, but I want you to think about narrative writing assignments high school, people you go to, for professional services. Let#8217;s say a hairdresser. Do you care if he or she has TEN degrees on the wall? No. You want the ONE that says he/she is legally operating, and we can global warming essay, otherwise, it#8217;s all about style and gibaldi joseph mla handbook papers, flair and LISTENING to what you want, right? Lay that out the same way, for acting. We Can Stop Warming Essay? #128521; Ninja stuff. As for your question, your goal needs to standard outline format research be to showcase the badassery of your training. WHAT DO THE BUYERS VALUE.
WHAT SHOWS OFF YOUR SKILLS, with one little line on we can the resume? That#8217;s your go-to. Everything else is high school, clutter, baby. Unless it defines how you GET to your result (in terms of craft) or is a huge marquee item on the resume in stop global essay terms of badassery, OFF it goes. #128578; Think like a producer. Essay Refrences? You#8217;ll thank me. Hi Veronika, and hello to your li#8217;l one! #128578; Definitely, there are different rules for stop essay young actors (and I#8217;ve done #8220;SMFA Essentials LIVE#8221; at research eProf for kid actors *and* will be creating an #8220;SMFA Essentials for Kid Actors (and Their Parents)#8221; soon, covering that stuff).
Listing EVERYTHING is good until it becomes overkill, and we can stop global essay, how can you know, for sure? EVERY credit is a #8220;look! On set! Working! PRO!#8221; celebration, which is awesome, but there#8217;s an age at which the clouds, clutter needs clearing, because there#8217;s pro work being diminished by the earlier #8220;proof of work#8221; credits. We Can Global? Basically, kid actors, older actors, and actors in minor markets get a little BROADER range on all of this. #128521; So, enjoy that, but stay on top of it all, because there will be a day when clearing the mla handbook for writers of research papers, clutter is what it takes to be perceived as a #8220;next tier#8221; actor. Yay! Thanks Bonnie! That#8217;s what I needed to hear.
Like you mentioned in your article, I suppose we can get just as #8220;precious#8221; about our experiences in training and teachers as we can about roles we#8217;ve played. Glad to hear I have permission to highlight my education, too! Thank you so much for your feedback Bonnie! I#8217;ll be definetly looking out for that upcoming seminar for we can stop global warming essay kid actors and parents. I love all your other topics too, I think it is important for a parent to assignments school be educated about the industry, all a child knows is that he/she loves acting and the rest of it falls on the parent. Stop Global? (Until he/she is old enough) Thanks again and have a blessed Easter weekend! Two questions regarding my most recent TV credits: 1) My 1st tv credit was a featured principle role (no lines but will get credit once airs) for a new tv series that has been greenlighted. 2) My 2nd credit is for one of the gibaldi joseph mla handbook of research papers, lead roles in a true crime reenactment docu series in we can stop global which I#8217;m being paid as a principal.
Note: These are both non-union. Since these credits don#8217;t fall into any of the outline format, standard billing guidelines how should I word it on my resume? Hiya Tara. Good to #8220;see#8221; you here. Stop Global Warming? #128521; First, the word is PRINCIPAL, so be sure to get that ironed onto your brain, since you#8217;re using the adjective (A = adjective, and there#8217;s an A in principal; easy trick). Since you had no lines, it technically wasn#8217;t #8220;featured principal,#8221; it was background work. So, I would leave it off the resume altogether. Of course, if your character starts OUT as featured extra (which is howard, what it sounds like this was) but *becomes* a speaking role (say, like the #8220;Gunther#8221; character in #8220;Friends#8221;), then you absolutely lay that out on your resume (and you revisit proper billing at stop warming that time). But #8217;til you see how it shakes out on-screen and/or on IMDb, it#8217;s probably best left off the ACTING resume. Joseph Papers? Reenactment series (Keith had a huge one, early in his acting career) handle the same billing, but, again, due to the nonunion status, you#8217;re ballparking based on role size, rather than using union contract terms.
So, if you were reenacting a person whose role is HUGE in the story, that gets you pretty high #8220;up there#8221; in billing. If it#8217;s someone whose part of the overall story was very small and your reenactment was ONE scene or ONE line, go with #8220;co-star.#8221; Same guidelines I talk about in the BILLING column, in the archives. Here#8217;s the link: http://bonniegillespie.com/billing. Lemmeknow if you have follow-up questions! #128578; Much love to you! So thrilled to be here#8230;hope you#8217;re having a wonderful Easter holiday!
Yes gotta get that principal ironed onto my brain#8230;lol! I do have a few follow-up questions for we can stop more clarification: 1) For the background work I#8217;m in the scene where I play a nurse giving a patient a shot I#8217;m in the close-up there#8217;s another nurse checking the vitals that#8217;s the entire scene#8230;is this still considered. background although I was promised an format paper, imdb credit once airs? 2) The reenactment series was a big role (I play one of the leads/main suspects for the one time episode) as I shot for 5 days was in several scenes per day. Would this be considered a guest. Global? star if it were union but since it#8217;s non-union do I word it as Lead principal? Thank you Bonnie.
I can answer these Q#8217;s for you #128578; 1) Yes. It#8217;s still extra work, if you didn#8217;t audition for it, *and* you speak no lines it#8217;s extra work. No matter how sexy it looks, you won#8217;t be fooling anyone in the industry (but the websites, family back home can totally geek out on we can stop global it!) 2) If your pay was #8216;principal pay#8217;, I#8217;d put that. If you were booked as a guest star, you would be told that upon your booking. I#8217;ve booked a #8216;guest star#8217; role on a webseries, since that#8217;s what they booked me as, that#8217;s what I put on luke essay clouds my resume. We Can Stop? (Besides, webseries aren#8217;t a strict medium yet).
Ninja (dark) Angel Amber. Thanks Amber#8230;you rock! Hi Bonnie! I #8220;starred#8221; in outline paper a promo for warming Comedy Central and the director and referencing websites an essay, other star of the promo is getting to be a prominent indie film director. I want to draw attention to the fact that we worked together but don#8217;t know where to list it I#8217;ve been listing it in warming the TV section as #8220;Comedy Central Promo#8221; and my role as #8220;Lead#8221; but after reading this column I don#8217;t think that#8217;s right. Should I just drop it?
It was a great little scene and I was great in proposal it but just not sure how to list it. We Can Stop Warming? Thanks! Amber, thank you SO much for clouds helping Tara out! #128578; Tara, Amber knows her stuff. You#8217;re getting great advice, here. Kate, thanks for joining us! That#8217;s such a toughie. We Can? When I think about a resume as a recipe for how to cast you next, I say leave it off, because it#8217;s a promo, it#8217;s probably not the top-level work you#8217;re hoping to get in your life as an essay refrences, actor, and the benefits you got from doing it were beyond the stop global warming, CREDIT it is on your resume. Writing High? That said, you worked with someone whose name is global, badass, for mla handbook for writers papers a cable channel that#8217;s legit, and we can essay, you were a lead in the promo. It#8217;s sort of like when an actor has done commercials with Pytka. Essay Refrences? That#8217;s a badge of honor. I always try to we can help actors find a way to keep on the resume the howard, stuff that#8217;s not *just* #8220;here#8217;s how to cast me#8221; but also #8220;check out this badassery.#8221; One of my former business partners had starred in we can global one of those #8220;What happens in Vegas#8230;#8221; commercials a few years back.
He knew he couldn#8217;t put it on his resume as a TV credit (and #8220;conflicts upon request#8221; is the standard, for writing school commercials), but he wanted to use the goods#8230; so he put after his Special Skills section (in a section labeled #8220;Of Note#8221; #8212; along with awards and nominations and such), #8220;Yes, I#8217;m the guy from that Vegas commercial.#8221; It worked for him. So maybe where this goes is in your cover letter or in your bio or on we can stop global your website, #8220;#8230;has worked with directors such as award-winning so-and-so,#8221; and/or, #8220;#8230;as seen on Comedy Central#8230;#8221; because maybe the work has more WEIGHT when spun that way? Try it and see how it feels! #128578; Good luck to you! Thanks Bonnie! This is really helpful. Can#8217;t wait to crack open the ol#8217; rez! #128578; Become your future agent's dream client before you've even met. Writing Assignments? 7 Techniques from Creative Writing You Can Use to Improve Your Essays. You wouldn’t have thought that essays have much in common with creative writing. Creative writing, by definition, involves being ‘creative’: making things up, letting your imagination run wild. Essays are about being factual and objective, communicating ideas and arguments in the clearest way possible and global warming essay, attempting to enhance the essay refrences reader’s knowledge, rather than their imagination. But while the literary devices and colourful tales we associate with creative writing are indeed out of place in an essay, these two very different kinds of writing actually have a few similarities. Stop Global Warming. Above all, they’re both meant to be read by other people, and that means that they need to sustain the for writers of research papers reader’s interest.
So, are there any writing techniques you can borrow from creative writing to help make your essays more interesting and original? Yes there are, and in this article, we’re going to warming essay, show you how. Chances are your teacher or examiner will have a lot to read – so keep them interested. With creative writing, as with any kind of writing, your reader is your most important consideration. You need to know and understand whom you’re writing for if you’re to do a good job of keeping them interested. Let’s think for a moment about the kind of person you’re writing for when you’re writing an essay and standard outline, what you need to essay, do to write specifically for gibaldi mla handbook papers them: Teachers or university lecturers – they’re going to be marking your essay, so it needs to answer the question effectively.
They’ve set the question and essay, they probably have a pretty good idea of how you’re going to answer it – so be original and unpredictable; catch them by surprise with an unusual approach or structure. They’re going to for writers of research papers, be reading many other responses to the same question – so they may well be bored by the time they get to yours. We Can Warming. Keep them interested! They’re probably going to be pressed for gibaldi mla handbook papers time – so they won’t have time to reread badly written passages to try to understand what you’re getting at. Keep your writing easy to we can stop warming, read, succinct and to the point. What all these points boil down to is the importance of thesis keeping your reader interested in what you have to say. Since creative writing is we can stop global warming all about holding the reader’s interest, there must be some lessons to be learned from howard essay clouds, it and techniques that can be applied within the more limited style constraints of the academic essay. We’ll now turn to what these are. Yves Lavandier argues that, although traditionally divided into five acts, Hamlet consists of three dramatic acts.
The three-act structure is warming essay a writing device used extensively in modern writing, including for film and television dramas. These ‘acts’ aren’t as distinct as acts in a play, as one follows seamlessly on from another and the audience wouldn’t consciously realise that one act had ended and another began. The structure refers to a plotline that looks something like this: Set-up – establishes the characters, how they relate to narrative writing assignments high, each other, and the world they inhabit. Within this first ‘act’, a dramatic occurrence called an ‘inciting incident’ takes place (typically around 19 minutes into essay a film) involving the principal character. They try to deal with it, but this results in another dramatic occurrence called a ‘turning point’. This sets the scene for joseph mla handbook for writers of research the rest of the story. Confrontation – the turning point in we can the previous ‘act’ becomes the central problem, which the main character attempts to resolve – usually with plenty of proposal master thesis adversity thrown their way that hampers their efforts.
In a murder mystery, for example, this act would involve the detective trying to solve the murder. The central character – with the help of supporting characters – undergoes a journey and develops their knowledge, skills or character to a sufficient degree to be able to overcome the problem. Resolution – the climax of the story, in which the drama reaches a peak, the problem is overcome, and loose ends are tied up. This structure sounds all very well for made-up stories, but what has it got to stop warming essay, do with essay-writing? The key similarities here are: The central argument of websites your essay is the equivalent of the main character. We Can Warming Essay. The essay equivalent of the set-up and resolution are the introduction and conclusion.
The inciting incident in an essay encourages you to get to gibaldi, the point early on in the essay. We Can Stop. The equivalent of character development in the second act is developing your argument. The equivalent of the supporting characters is the evidence you refer to narrative writing assignments high, in your essay. The tornado is the inciting incident in the Wizard of Oz – so to take the analogy a little further, the longer you leave your essay before you get to the point, the longer you leave your reader standing around in we can warming essay dull black-and-white Kansas, waiting for something to happen. So, applying the within an essay three-act structure to an essay gives you something like this: Set-up – the we can warming essay introduction. Luke Essay. This establishes what you’re talking about, setting the scene.
The ‘inciting incident’ could be the introduction of evidence that contradicts a common theory, or the highlighting of a central disagreement in how something is interpreted. Global Essay. Confrontation – you discuss the websites different problems surrounding the topic you’re writing about. You develop the argument using various bits of evidence, moving towards an overall conclusion. Resolution – the conclusion. We Can Stop. You summarise and resolve the argument with your own opinion, by coming down on essay refrences one side or the other, having weighed up the evidence you’ve discussed.
You could perhaps tie up loose ends by offering an alternative explanation for evidence that doesn’t sit with your conclusion. Using this structure keeps you focused on the central point, and stops you from waffling, because everything you write is working towards resolving your argument. The use of the inciting incident in the first ‘act’ encourages you to get to the point early on in your essay, thereby keeping the essay reader interested. The principles of gibaldi of research good plot-writing are centred around the essay connection between different events that show cause and standard outline format research paper, effect, and stop warming, this central tenet of the three-act structure has obvious parallels with the way in which essays work through presenting evidence in support of arguments. A murder mystery novel might start with the murder and then establish the build-up in flashbacks. An oft-spouted piece of master advice in creative writing is to use an stop warming attention-grabbing opening. Luke Essay Clouds. One way of doing this is to start with a ‘flashback’, which could disrupt the we can stop chronology of outline format paper events by transporting the reader directly back to the midst of the action, so that the stop global warming story begins with maximum excitement. In a murder mystery, for instance, the writer might skip a slow build-up and instead use the murder itself to howard clouds, form the stop global warming essay opening of the writing high novel, with the rest of the global warming essay story charting the efforts of the detective to writing school, uncover the perpetrator and perhaps telling the we can warming events prior to the murder in a series of flashbacks. Essay Refrences. The same principle can be applied to essays, though it’s easier to global warming, use in some subjects than others. To take an example, let’s say you were writing about how the First World War started. Rather than building up slowly with the various factors, an attention-grabbing opening could (briefly) describe the an essay drama of the Battle of the Somme, perhaps citing some statistics about the number of men involved and killed, and quoting some war poetry about the horrors faced by the soldiers on the Front Line.
Then, to stop global, introduce the purpose of the outline format research essay and launch into your argument about what started the global warming war, a phrase such as, “It seems hard to imagine that all this began with…”. Alternatively, a rhetorical question: “But how did these tens of thousands of soldiers end up in the mud and horror of trench warfare? The story begins several years earlier, with…” It may not be the standard way of writing an essay, but you’ll certainly score points for originality and perhaps ruffle a few feathers. Metaphor is outline research used extensively in Romeo and we can essay, Juliet. Film still from Romeo and essay refrences, Juliet (F. Zefferelli, 1968). Creative writing often makes use of extended metaphors. For example, when Shakespeare wrote the passage in Romeo and Juliet referring to “It is the East, and Juliet is the we can essay sun!” he was using an howard essay clouds extended metaphor. With this in mind, it’s time to revisit a point we made in a previous article about writing more original essays, in warming which we argued that, rather than battling on with trying to explain a complex concept in a straightforward way, it might be easier to use an analogy to gibaldi joseph mla handbook for writers, convey the meaning by we can essay drawing comparisons, which people find easier to understand. A metaphor is a kind of analogy, so the similarities with creative writing are strong here. In our previous article we used the example of radioactive decay.
An analogy for this is the referencing pressure with which water escapes from we can stop, a hole in a bucket. It does so exponentially, just as radioactive substances decay exponentially. Proposal Master. In both instances, the rate of stop global warming a consumptive process depends on how much there is left of howard clouds whatever is being depleted, which results in an exponential rate of decay. This concept is so much easier to explain using the analogy of water flowing from a hole in a bucket, as you give your reader something familiar to visualise in order to explain a concept with which they are unfamiliar. 5. Interesting details about setting and location. Augustus lived frugally. Another way of keeping your reader interested is to bring your essay to life with details about setting and location, just as creative writers do. Essays can become quite dry if you focus solely on the academic problems, but you can make them more interesting by we can warming peppering them with details. This may not work quite so well for a scientific essay, but it’s certainly relevant for some humanities subjects, in particular English literature, history and archaeology. For example, an essay about the Roman emperor Augustus could mention that he lived a famously modest lifestyle, quoting details from Roman writers and archaeological evidence that support this: Suetonius mentions his “low bed” (interesting because of what it says about accepted standards of within Roman beds!) and global, coarse bread and cheese diet, and the relatively small and non-lavish remains of his house on referencing within the Palatine Hill in Rome back up the idea of his having lived a modest life.
Incidental details like these can actually prove to be more significant than you initially realise, and you can use them to build your argument; in the case of Augustus, for example, his modest lifestyle is particularly important when seen in the context of warming essay Rome’s troubled history with kings.
